The Battery Industry in Europe: EV Batteries, Recycling, and Circular Economy Trends

June 10, 2025

I’ve just come back from two major industry gatherings — The Battery Show Europe in Stuttgart and the E-Waste World Conference & Battery Recycling Expo in Frankfurt. These events gave me a front-row seat to where the European battery industry stands today.

What struck me most was the mix of uncertainty and tenacity shaping the conversations. Yes, the shows were smaller compared to previous years, but in some ways that sharpened the discussions. Across the floor, people were asking the same question:

👉 “When will the European EV battery industry move out of ‘on hold’ mode?”

It’s clear that EV batteries, recycling, and circular economy strategies in Europe are in a moment of pause — but not a stop. What I saw was determination to keep moving forward, even if unevenly.

EV Battery Industry in Europe: A Reality Check

The European EV battery ecosystem is at a crossroads. Gigafactory announcements, recycling targets, and bold electrification strategies are well known — but the path forward isn’t smooth. Right now, we’re seeing:

  • Market uncertainty → companies hesitating to invest in battery manufacturing expansion.

  • Policy pressures → as the EU ramps up battery regulation compliance and sustainability rules.

  • Technology transitions → with new chemistries, recycling methods, and digital tools creating both opportunities and risks.

The result is a mood that’s both cautious and curious. Yet the commitment to circular electrification — designing better EV batteries, scaling recycling, and reducing environmental impact — remains strong.

Battery Recycling: Where Circular Economy Takes Center Stage

One of the strongest themes at both Stuttgart and Frankfurt was battery recycling. No surprise — Europe’s Battery Regulation is pushing higher material recovery rates, and the pressure to deliver is real.

At the Battery Recycling Expo, the key questions were:

  • How do we safely dismantle EV batteries at scale?

  • What’s the right balance between pyrometallurgy, hydrometallurgy, and direct recycling?

  • How do recyclers prepare for the wide variety of EV battery chemistries hitting the market?

Recycling and reuse are no longer side notes — they are at the core of Europe’s circular economy strategy for batteries.

Tenacity: The People Driving Forward

Despite the uncertainty, what inspired me most were the people who continue to push forward:

  • Engineers refining safer EV battery dismantling processes.

  • Innovators building the next generation of battery manufacturing equipment.

  • Recyclers improving recovery efficiency across chemistries.

  • Startups testing new business models aligned with sustainability and regulation.

The halls may have been quieter, but those who showed up are deeply committed. They’re not giving up on Europe’s EV battery future. And neither am I.

Electrification Academy: Building on These Conversations

These events reminded me why I started Electrification Academy. Every discussion — about battery safety, recycling, or scaling EV manufacturing — circled back to the same needs:

  • Better knowledge sharing

  • Stronger industry connections

  • Practical insights beyond theory

That’s what Electrification Academy is designed to provide: a B2B knowledge platform for electrification, bringing together experts, vendors, and industry users to solve Europe’s toughest battery and circular economy challenges.

Final Thoughts: Where Europe’s Battery Industry Goes Next

So where does that leave us?

The European battery industry may be in a moment of hesitation, but it is far from stalling. Circular economy principles are moving center stage, and battery recycling, sustainability, and collaboration are defining the next chapter.

My biggest takeaway: this industry isn’t defined by its slowdown — it’s defined by the people who keep showing up.

And that’s what I plan to keep doing: showing up, sharing knowledge, and working with all of you to accelerate the future of EV batteries, recycling, and electrification in Europe.

Let’s keep going. One, two, three — go, go, go!
